History

Hank Abraham is his name. He was nicknamed Hank while working in the plantation fields. He is 24 years old. Born in 1856, his mother and father were part of a plantation in Georgia. He was sold, along with his mother and father, to a plantation owner in southern Mississippi. He grew up on the plantation. Unbeknownst to the owner, his parents taught him the language of the African tribe that their grandparents had been born into. Because of his unspoken defiance of the plantation owner, his father was not on good terms with the plantation owner and was beaten physically many times in front of him.

At the end of the Civil War, the plantation owner released Hank and his parents. They traveled west to New Orleans. His parents settled down in a house and he lived there for a while, but his father became a gambler and a raging drunk. One night, his father won a large sum of money from a white man, but the man refused to pay him. They got into a fight and his father was killed.

Hank learned piano from several men who played in showrooms downtown. When he was 19, he joined a caravan headed west, using all his money to buy prospecting equipment. On the way he began to pick up things about the trade from his fellow caravanners. His goal is to earn a large sum of money for his mother back in New Orleans so that she can live without hardship for the rest of her life.

Hank's actual last name was Wilkinson, like his parents', but that name was taken from his plantation owner and he rejected it. As soon as he could, he started telling people his last name was Abraham, after Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was the only white man his father seemed to have any respect for. He, like his father, has a problem with drinking and gambling, but he always makes sure to put a good portion of what he makes into a savings for his mother.
